English Ministry Report for November 2011

The month of November is the month of thanksgiving. Not only because of the yearly tradition that we celebrate this event, but also of the many things the Lord has done in our midst and for these we are thankful to Him.

Our Thank Jesus It’s Friday! (TJIF) worship service at the YWCA last November 4 was our 8^th meeting since it started this year. We are thankful to God for giving us the opportunity to offer this worship experience close to where the students are and to the universities where we do have outreach Bible studies. This certainly lends support to the campus ministry too.

Celebrating our church’s 64^th anniversary on the first Sunday is something we are also thankful to God for. The psalmist said, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!  (Psalm 133:1-3, NKJV) The three congregations from the different services and representatives from the branch churches have joined together for a day of worship, fellowship and rejoicing in God’s faithfulness to the Assembly Kyoto Church. It is something that doesn’t happen often except on special occasions such as this. Indeed it’s a beautiful sight to see and feel our connectedness in Christ when we get together as one.

Lighthouse English Café (LEC) is another form of outreach to our community and English conversation students at church. We are grateful to God for sustaining this ministry as it winds up its second year of offering coffee, tea, sweets, and free interaction with both local and foreign English speakers. Most importantly, God helped us to create programs that tackle life issues as well as biblical themes that introduce people to a living and loving relationship with Christ. Last November 26, the last meeting for this year took place. Those who attended were able to enjoy games, good food, meeting new friends and testimonies of His grace. In addition, I shared a message on why it is important to be thankful to God and gave ideas on what are some of the things that we could be thankful for. Finally, the guests received their early Christmas gift of the season’s song selections in both English and Japanese.

The International Congregation held its annual Thanksgiving Dinner last November 27^th. The menu included veggies, mashed potatoes and corn soup, and rotisserie chicken for the main dish. For dessert, there was pumpkin pie.

The real focus of the evening however, was on how people expressed their gratitude to God. There was singing, sharing of testimonies around each beautifully decorated tables and a sense of solemnity in simplicity and gladness of heart in the Lord, who is the Source of “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17, NKJV). Swee Ho Lim, a doctor from Singapore who attends our church with his wife and daughter, shared about how he saw the hand of God in His life. He said that they were preparing to come to Japan since over two years ago. He almost changed his mind in coming because he got his family’s visa to Japan on the same day the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck on March 11^th. Despite of it they came and he is still enjoying the blessing of being in Kyoto City, with our church and on how the Lord is using him and his family in serving the Lord. Brother Swee Ho is now leading a group of men from our church to a weekly Bible study and discipleship.

Indeed, space is not enough to express our thanks to God. Yet our hearts rejoice in the goodness of our great and benevolent Heavenly Father!

September Highlights

“I’ll see you in September when summer is gone,” Sonny Curtis wrote this line in his song a generation or so ago. This somehow is true for many in our international congregation who are now back after being away for vacation. But, this past month will probably be best remembered for two significant events that took place in the church, namely: the Allan Alipio & Michelle Anne Tonks’ wedding; and, the visit of Rev. Dominic Yeo together with one of his pastors in Singapore, Pastor Derrick Yeo.

It’s a historic first for the international congregation to witness an international marriage from among its attendees after the 5 o’clock service here in church last September 18th. Allan is from the Philippines and Michelle is from Australia. There was another international wedding before but it was held somewhere else.

Select guests attended this solemn occasion from both the Christian community and some Japanese friends. The Ricohermoso children formed part of the entourage, while Atsuko Waka and Haruka Shitabayashi provided the special songs and church musicians accompanied them. Pastor Keiko Murakami delivered the homily with translation by Moto Harada while yours truly, officiated the ceremony. Michelle’s mother was also in attendance. The joyful celebration was a tribute to the redeeming power and love of God who brought this couple together after an untoward incident in their relationship.

On the other hand, Rev. Dominic Yeo who is the Senior Pastor of the 7000 plus members of Trinity Christian Center and the current General Superintendent for the Assemblies of God in Singapore came to preach with power to our congregants on September 25^th. He exhorted the people to step in faith and claim breakthroughs for their lives and for the church. When it’s time for the altar call, most of them came forward for prayer and in response to the challenge. The spiritual exercise continued till late as people stayed on for corporate prayer. It was truly a real blessing to behold!

Rev. Yeo and his associate were in Japan for the Kansai Conference of the AOG. Seven representatives from the English service participated in the said conference and so were doubly blessed to hear Rev. Yeo when he spoke again at the church.

Many things are happening in and out of the church that space limitation prevents me from detailing to you the work of God among us. Anyway, please continue to pray for our Missions Month in October and wait for my next report on the forthcoming retreat. God bless us all!

A Time for Every Activity Under the Sun

While the heat of summer scorched the city, many people from our congregation had taken time to escape and relax elsewhere. My family, including.

It doesn’t mean, however, that nothing significant happened in the home front. We still had our regular activities going and going and going. We even had Chill & Grill, a summer barbecue tradition in the church garden. This year, 101 adults and children attended it. Some wore yukata (Japanese summer wear). There were games and an ample supply of kakigori (shaved ice and flavored with fruit syrup). A worship service capped the whole event with many non-Christians in attendance.

Though without a bang, a new discipleship group has started meeting on August 26^th. Brother Swee Ho, a surgical doctor from Singapore, has agreed to lead the four young men into deepening their relationship with God and being accountable to each other through Bible study and other spiritual disciplines.

News Nuggets

Thank Jesus It’s Friday!, a once a month worship service held at the Kyoto YWCA, marked our fifth gathering last July 1^st. It was a rainy day, but people still managed to come for an evening of praise and worship. The next one will be held on September 2^nd. In August, the place is scheduled for renovation.

Sakura Christ Church is an hour drive from Kyoto City. Beginning in July and almost weekly, I go to this church to assist them in their worship ministry. Keiko Murakami-sensei leads and organizes events for the said church since the current pastor is still recovering from an illness.

It’s really encouraging to see new people come to our campus outreaches at Doshisha and Kyoto universities. Learning the Bible in English is a rare opportunity for our contacts and is like hitting two birds with one stone.

This year’s theme for the English Camp held at the Utano Youth Hostel is, “Building Bridges.” A total of 26 people participated in the two-day intensive course featuring multi-tiered class lessons, songs, games, and other surprises. This year, the oldest attendee is an 82-year old woman and the farthest is from Yamanashi Prefecture.

Motomichi Harada, who earned his PhD in quantum physics in the U.S., is joining our ministry for about ten months before embarking on his seminary training.

Our Lighthouse English Café ministry is continually evolving. Thanks to the creative collaboration of our ministry team that crafts each month’s program. Truly, each month’s activity is something to look forward to. However, due to the room’s limited space we can only accommodate around thirty people each time. We praise God for our regular guests and volunteers.

The summer season has begun. Usually, we see the exodus of people from our church during this month – not only to escape the heat of summer but also due to transitions happening in people’s lives and careers. We had a farewell fellowship for Curtis Peters (Canadian) last July 24^th. Next, Hiroya Iwabuchi is going back to his hometown in Hokkaido after finishing his studies at Ritsumeikan University. Early next month, we will also send off Millicent and Princess as they return to Ghana, Africa after a two or three-month research stint at Kyoto University.

Recent Milestones

It passed by quietly, but my family reached our 10th year of doing ministry in Japan on June 2nd of the current year. We've spent the last five years in the Kansai Region.
Last June 5 (Sunday), I finished a series of messages on I Peter that began sometime in January 2011.
New forms of ministry initiatives have been started with amazing results.
A little less than 20 nations and all continents are represented in our international service on Sundays.
Increasing our leadership base and intensifying intercessory prayer in the life of the church.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow. To Him be the glory!

At 2:46 PM local time, March 11, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck Japan off the eastern coast of Miyagi Prefecture. This is the largest recorded earthquake ever to have struck Japan, and one of the five largest recorded earthquakes in the world.

HARD-HIT AREAS:

Days after the earthquake, heavy aftershocks are still being felt throughout Japan, with no way of knowing how long these aftershocks will continue. Some experts have said that there could be strong aftershocks of up to magnitude level 8 for six months. Please pray that the earthquakes will cease.
Pray also for the buildings that survived the initial shock, but are being hammered by the aftershocks. Many buildings still stand, but were weakened, and because of this strong aftershocks are very dangerous.
The devastation from the initial earthquake was compounded by heavy tsunami that hammered the east coast. Sendai City was hit the hardest, both by the temblor and the tsunami. Some towns were entirely obliterated by the tsunami. At 6 PM on Sunday, March 14th, tsunami advisories across the eastern coastal region were finally lifted, but with the threat of strong aftershocks, the threat of tsunami still loom. Praise God that these tsunami have ceased for the time being. Please pray that the affected areas remain safe from further tsunami.
Due to the seismic activity, the ground level in much of coastal Japan actually sank, so sea water that came in during the tsunami is not receding. This is hampering relief efforts. Please pray that relief teams will be able to work safely in these areas.
In the wake of the earthquake, fires raged throughout affected areas. Pray for the victims of these fires and those who have lost their homes.
Hundreds of people are still stranded in damaged areas. Rescue is difficult due to the remaining tsunami water. Please pray for their swift rescue.
Casualty reports are still coming in. The death toll estimates keep rising. There are over 2,500 confirmed dead. It is possible that the death toll could exceed 10,000 in Miyagi prefecture alone. Pray for those who have lost their loved ones. Pray for those who are trapped and injured, as well as those who are missing friends and family.
Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in the coastal areas and the area around the Fukushima nuclear power plants. Conditions for these people are terrible. There is a shortage of food and water; some people are getting little more than a single rice ball and a bottle of water to sustain them for a day. Night temperatures in northern Japan are bitterly cold, and there is no electricity for heat in many of these areas. Please pray for them, and all who are having to stay in public shelters.
The future is uncertain and grim for those who have lost everything in this disaster. Pray for hope.
Relief workers are working around the clock to rescue survivors, but reaching many victims is proving incredibly difficult due to the rubble and water levels. Pray for the relief workers, that God would grant safety and stamina.

NUCLEAR CRISIS

In Fukushima Prefecture, two nuclear power plants are under a state of emergency. At the Fukushima Daiichi plant, there have been three reported explosions so far, injuring over a dozen workers. The number 4 reactor has broken out into flames two times. Pray for wisdom and strength for those who are struggling to get this situation under control, and for the workers who are risking their lives to prevent this situation from worsening.
Everyone within 20 kilometers of the plant has been evacuated, and those from 20 to 30 km away are being advised to stay indoors and take precautions against exposure. Pray for those who have been evacuated, and for those who are trapped indoors and frightened for the future.
Elevated radiation levels have been detected as far away as Tokyo. To constitute a health risk, these level would have to be hundreds of times higher than they currently are. The Japanese government is taking appropriate measures to protect its people. Please pray for people to be calm and to refrain from overreacting in fear.
Many of the stories being spread are alarmist and based on little more than panic. These stories are causing more fear and stress in a situation where people are already taxed to their limits. Please pray for the spread of proper information.
Pray also for the weather. With radiation being diffused into the air, wind or rain could carry it into populated areas and expose people. Pray that any wind will carry radiation out to sea rather than into populated areas.

IMPACT ON JAPAN:

Public transit systems in Tokyo and the surrounding areas are taxed to the limit by this disaster, and the transportation companies are no longer confident that the infrastructure can handle rush hour traffic. Please pray that this transportation situation can be resolved.
Millions of homes in northeastern Japan are without power. This has led to Japanese power companies arranging planned blackouts to conserve energy. Millions of people are still without water. Pray for the power plants and water facilities to be able to resume their work, and pray for those who do not have these essential supplies.
Pray for the Christians of Japan, that we would be able to mobilize relief efforts and provide for people's needs, both physical and spiritual. Pray also for the impact this is having on regular ministries, that Christians would be able to help their neighbors to remain calm, and that we would be able to provide comfort for the grieving.
Pray for areas where food, medicine, and drink shortages are occurring. The Japanese government has assured its citizens that there is enough food, and has had to advise its citizens to stop buying up supplies, so that relief teams can carry supplies to those in disaster-struck areas. Pray for people to remain calm, and for relief teams to be able to get hold of what they need to help the suffering.
Gasoline shortages are starting to become a very large problem. In many areas, gasoline rations are in effect. Pray for gasoline for those who need it.
On Sunday afternoon, Shinmoedake volcano on the island of Kyushu erupted, spewing ash and boulders into the air. So far, no casualties have been reported. Pray for the safety of the people of Kyushu.
Pray for the Japanese economy, for which the outlook was grim even before this disaster. Since the earthquake, massive losses have been posted, and there is no telling what impact this disaster will have on the economy for the long term.

PRAY FOR LOVE ON JAPAN | CRASH QUAKE RELIEF

Pray for relief teams that are on the ground, assessing needs in disaster-struck areas, and providing supplies to evacuees. Pray for their safety and maximum effectiveness in providing relief for the suffering.
Pray for supplies, especially gasoline.
Pray for salvation and hope for the people of Japan, and pray that Love on Japan can do its utmost to spread hope and the love of Christ in this difficult time.
Pray for stamina for all those working relief; for enough rest, for emotional fortitude, and unshakeable faith.

Japan Calamity on Three-Eleven

The mighty oceans have roared, O Lord. The mighty oceans roar like thunder; the mighty oceans roar as they pound the shore. But mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers on the shore — the Lord above is mightier than these! (Psalm 93:3–4,NLT)

The earthquakes and tsunami in Japan are two of the most horrific natural disasters in recent history, with over 1000 confirmed dead (at the time of this report) and thousands still missing. In addition to this tragic death toll, there exists a high probability that disease will claim thousands more in the coming months.

With a natural disaster as grave as this, it is vital that the body of Christ responds through fervent prayer and sensible action.

Prayer is the most effective way that we can help. I ask that we make a serious commitment to prayer in this time of tragedy. As Christians, we must keep this disaster at the top of our prayer lists. Every time we hear recent news on this event, we must pray and pray specifically!

The following are some suggested ways to pray:

Pray for the people affected by this disaster every time you hear about it.

Pray for the healing of the injured.

Pray for the families who have lost loved ones.

Pray for those people who have lost their homes.

Pray that disease and the spread of disease are avoided.

Pray that nuclear disaster would be averted.

Pray for the wisdom, safety, and strength of relief workers.

Pray for an opportunity to minister in a tangible way.

Pray that the gospel will be proclaimed and heard by those who have never heard it before.

In addition to prayer, we should take action in every way possible. Here are some Christ-like ways for you to make a difference in this time of need:

Give: You can help fund the efforts in Japan through your financial support. We are partnering with our brethren from many places to bring about the needed support to the most affected. Your faithful gift will be directly given to the relief and recovery efforts.

Likewise, we will accept food, water, and other basic necessities in due time. Please wait for our instructions when to bring those.

Share: It’s easy for people to blame or question God during times like these. I encourage you to take this opportunity to share the love and grace of God with those struggling with the magnitude of this tragedy.

Volunteer: Please consider joining us in reaching out and helping the survivors.

It is my prayer that through the power of the Holy Spirit, God directs you to minister Jesus to those in need, whether it is by volunteering, through your faithful support or prayer.

Heart's Day

As much as possible, I try to avoid being away from my family especially on special occasions. However, this time is different. I attended a conference with fellow missionaries with the International Teams in East Asia. I miss my loved ones and my schedule doesn't allow me to be home in time for Heart's Day.

The conference was very uplifting and the committee did a great job in achieving the goal of this year's theme. Soul care, that is.

We met new faces and heard wonderful testimonies of what God is doing in the Eastern hemisphere. I can't document the stories here, but I would be very happy to share some of them orally when I get home.

ENGLISH MINISTRY REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 2010

This time of year is harvest time in Kyoto just like in other places too. The changing colors of foliage present the changing of the season in its natural beauty. And, the events we have had at church reflect the feeling and sentiments of autumn.

We wrapped up our ten-month program for Lighthouse English Café last November 27^th. 30 people attended it. Those who came were treated to a semi-art exhibition cum talk show with Masako Miyamoto as the featured guest. Ms. Miyamoto is an accomplished painter with annual exhibitions in prominent cities and galleries in Japan. She spoke with such candor dealing with personal experiences as well her encounter with Jesus, whom she now serves lovingly and faithfully.

On November 28^th, we again held our fourth annual Thanksgiving Supper. Over fifty people joined and feasted on turkey, veggies, sandwiches, soup and several desserts. The highlight of the program was the reading of Biblical passages on praise and giving thanks to God. People also shared their testimonies around the table, set just like a big family gathering.

We also thank God for the brothers who visited to help in the ministries. Keith Bouy (Lake Villa, IL, USA), who comes to AKC twice a year stayed from Nov. 10 to De. 1. Pastor Leo Mirabuenos, a Filipino missionary candidate who stayed from Nov. 9-Dec. 7, joined many events and spoke in both the Filipino and the International services.

October 2010: Missions Month

AKC International Ministry Spearheads Missions Month

Each year is different, but October has become a de facto tradition as AKC’s missions-emphasis month. Since 2008, we’ve done several initiatives to inculcate into the hearts and minds of our congregants the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ. We’ve also provided opportunities for hands-on outreach-related activities.

Although it rained both Sundays on October 3 and 24, a squad of committed people from AKC went out and about near Hankyu Saiin and Kyoto Stations. They were armed with umbrellas, copies of the Book of Hope and assorted church materials to distribute to passersby. Thirty-three people volunteered in the distributions, reaching some 100 people in the process and multiplying the blessings to everyone.

In the home front, we also raised funds by serving two sacrificial meals as people gave voluntarily towards the project. Proceeds are earmarked for causes and ministries to be decided soon.

The Gideons International ministry in Japan also received a considerable support from our group. We invited Dr. Toyoyuki Nishi, the Bible distributor’s Kyoto representative, who testified about God’s amazing work through their ministry.

Another significant event we held was the seminar by Dr. Kunio Sakurai on the “Biblical and Legal Study on Immigration and Labor in Japan” catering mainly to the foreign audience on October 3^rd.

The month’s activities were capped by a film showing on the situation of Christians in a restricted country in the Middle East. It was disturbing, to put it mildly, but totally engaging and challenging our notions of our version of Christianity in a free country like Japan.

June 2010 Update

INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY

We are seeing the exodus of many foreigners living in Kyoto beginning this month. From our congregation alone, we bade goodbye to four people, namely: Jason Brown, Kevin Otsuka, Elisse Ota (all three are from California, USA) and to Curtis Peters (Canada). We specially appreciate the help of Jason and Kevin to our worship ministry as they played musical instruments and sang for us.

KUDOS TO PINOYS!

Since we started our once a month Filipino service in February, we have seen their numbers steadily increase. Their presence is not only seen in the services and during fellowship, but also in helping out our special events. The Lighthouse English Café patrons were treated to a cultural experience when the Pinoys did a slideshow about the Philippines, performed a traditional dance and served halo-halo, Philippine-style kakigori (crushed ice dessert with lots of other ingredients). Yum!

INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY UPDATE FOR MAY 2010

The beginning of this year presented to us a new vision for ministry. Pastor Hisoka Murakami, the Assembly Kyoto Church’s Senior Pastor, summed it all up in the verse spoken by the patriarch Israel to his son Joseph in Genesis 49: 22, “whose braches climb over a wall.” For our English-speaking congregation, it meant several images for growth and expansion. First of all, we would like to grow in our knowledge of God and in our relationship with Him. We cannot supplant communion with activity, time for the King with kingdom work. Likewise, we would like to grow in our relationship within our community of faith. There is a need for a more focused study of the Word of God and to the building up one another’s faith. Finally, we would like to glorify God by developing approaches to reaching out to those who are not of the faith yet.

ENGLISH SERVICE

The month of May is special in so many ways. Having five Sundays, we have filled–up the calendar and also have accomplished many things. On the first Sunday, we quietly remembered the 11^th anniversary of this ministry. There was no fanfare, but only a solemn acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness to us. On May 16^th, we heard a challenging and powerful testimony from Brother Nilo E., a Filipino missionary to a dangerous place in Central Asia. He talked about God’s call and purpose for our lives. We also joined the prayer campaign that started on May 13^th and culminated on May 23^rd for the Global Day of Prayer that happened on the same day as we celebrated the Pentecost, the widely accepted historical birth of the Christian church. Brother Patroba Odera (Kenya) led us in corporate prayer for this event.

In April we welcomed Pastor Takatani Mitsuyo, a new co-worker into our fellowship. This month, we were privileged to hear her lead us in worship and on the 30^th she debuted as a preacher in our congregation. Her message was based on the Gospel of St. Luke 19:1-10.

SUNDAY ENGLISH BIBLE STUDY

This is a weekly event that takes place from 4:00 to 4:55 p.m. Topics for May included studies in I Peter.

FILIPINO SERVICE

It started in February but we hold it once a month every third Sunday. The first guest speaker we had was the Rev. Fernando Paunil, Philippine National Director of Prayer-Life Ministries. He preached last May 16^th when we also got our first twenty copies of the Tagalog Bible that we used for the service.

FELLOWSHIP

Golden Week was a grand holiday for most people in Japan, however, around thirty people showed up for barbecue near Katsura River. We enjoyed playing games, chatting and moments of prayer too.

We also praise the Lord for the formal induction of Gordon Douglas Tippett into the membership last May 30. He is a missionary from Canada and has been attending and helping some of our ministries for almost four years now.

LIGHTHOUSE ENGLISH CAFÉ (L.E.C.)

This groundbreaking ministry got underway as an initiative by the members who attend the English service. In our desire to serve God and the community, we hold this event every fourth Saturday of the month, by transforming the fellowship room into a mini-coffee house. The volunteers engage guests in English conversation while enjoying specially prepared non-alcoholic drinks with a slice of cake. A typical afternoon averages 40 people (both guests and volunteers) and with some of our gifted musicians singing or playing music. There are also games and other features highlighting foreign culture, for example. Last May 22^nd, Praveen Singh (India) presented his country’s wedding custom while Allan Alipio (Philippines) narrated a very inspiring story. Michelle Tonks (Australia) and Muhannad Fakhoury (Jordan) played the flute and classical guitar respectively.

PRAISE REPORT

1. We praise the Lord for two American young people who help us in the worship service. Kevin Otsuka and Jason Brown are exchange students now studying at Doshisha University.

2. We also thank God for the harvest of souls. We have seen four individual professions of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ both from our congregation and from the English Bible classes in the universities.

3. We are also seeing a growing desire from our contacts to explore the Bible and the Christian faith. I am trying hard to avoid mentioning the name this day is more popularly called lest this message be misconstrued as prank. NO, it's real and here are some facts to know why I'm serious:

It's a bit of concern because we have special events going on over the weekend. We are having a picnic or cherry blossom viewing (Jp, hanami) on Saturday (April 3rd). The following day is, of course, Easter or Resurrection Sunday. Yet, it has been forecasted that it would be rainy today and in the coming days. The weather is really acting strange lately. Have you seen snow in spring? Yes, it happened here on Monday night!?

It is good to remember though that God controls nature. We recently launched our new ministry, the Lighthouse English Cafe (LEC). This coffee ministry serves tea and of course, brewed coffee to a growing group of customers who also want to hone their English-speaking ability by chatting with foreign hosts (volunteers from our church). We also offer free program in the course of the afternoon every fourth Saturday of the month plus a surprise slice of cake or quiche prepared by our hospitable ladies. With the consecutive LEC events we held on February 27 and on March 27, the days surrounding them were really gloomy and wet. But God, in answer to the prayers of many, made the skies lit up on the day of our LEC ministry. Praise the LORD!

Did you know that we now have a FILIPINO ministry? This on and off ministry has finally taken off the ground with a monthly worship service conducted in the Filipino language (Tagalog) to cater to the growing Filipino community in Kyoto City. Currently held once a month (every 3rd Sunday) from 13:00-14:30 P.M., we meet in the main sanctuary with less than twenty people. The first meeting was last February 21st and the next one will be on April 18th. Please spread the word. A new link on our website leads to it, but it is still being developed.

By the way, I already finished preaching on the series covering the names of God. After this Holy Week, we will again consider a new series of messages. Please pray for my preparation and watch out for it!

In March, we said our sayonara (farewell) to Miki Liu, an exchange student from University of Queensland at Kyoto's University of Foreign Studies, who has since returned to Australia to graduate. We also miss Phil Jimmieson, Miki's friend who came to visit. Likewise, Mami Morioka has gone back to Australia to pursue her PhD.

There's a rhyme I've seen on my wife's pillow case some years ago when she was still my girlfriend. Somehow it stuck with me:

Time Flies Fast

How could I have missed it? I noticed that it’s already February and I haven’t written anything in January. It’s 2010 by the way!

Here’s a litany of things that took place early this year until now:

1. New Year’s countdown at Miyamoto-san’s place.

2. New Year’s Day worship service with free osechi ryori (Japanese traditional New Year’s dish).

3. IBC, a new Christian organization at Doshisha University, was accredited.

4. Hosted a South Korean Youth With A Mission (YWAM) team.

5. Church prayer gathering.

6. Hosting the Calunge family in their mission exposure trip.

7. Developing new leaders to do ministry.

8. Forming some ministry committees.

9. Ushering ministry seminar.

10. AKC annual membership meeting.

11. February 14^th church fellowship.

12. Launching the “Love Haiti” campaign to gather donations for the said country.

Here are some things to look forward to this month:

1. IBC hosts a camp at church from February 21-24.

2. Our first attempt to form a Filipino service on February 21^st.

3. Launching of Lighthouse English Café on February 27^th.

DECEMBER 2009

I love December for several reasons. One, this is the month we celebrate CHRISTmas and my wife’s birthday too. Two, there’s something special in the air. I don’t know if it’s the cold spell of winter or the prospect of “crossing over” to the New Year. There is something mysterious about it that reminds me of times past. Three, I definitely love the Christmas carols and music that I hear around this time of year.

Speaking of Christmas carols/music, I have several CDs at home that I play alternately. I listen to jazz renditions to the classical and even Filipino Christmas medleys.

Before I go further, let me say a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and a BLESSED NEW YEAR TOO! We don’t know what the next year awaits us. I am just privileged to have these few words directly expressed to you. Just bear up with me. It’s from my heart.

The past weeks were busy more than the usual. We had been to special Christmas-related gatherings and meetings. For the first-time also since we ministered to the Assembly Kyoto Church, we (my wife) initiated a Nativity play with her English students as the main characters. We praise the Lord for the beautiful outcome and the good turn out especially of the children’s parents. We are also grateful to the many hands from AKC that extended help to make the said event a success.

One other big event coming up is the Christmas Eve Candle-light Service that we hold each year. We have a slightly different program planned for this year and also, we have the Gospel Choir singing for us. The service begins at 19:00 (or 7:00 PM).

I will be sharing a message on Isaiah 9:6 for our Christmas Eve Service. It says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

For Sunday, December 27^th, we will reflect on the account surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ and about the lesser-known characters of the same event.

Time Flies So Fast

Recap

After our Missions Month in October, we have a series of big events this month namely, our host Japanese church's 62nd anniversary and the African Night. The former event featured Pastor Hisoka Murakami as the main presenter of the church's vision for next year and beyond. His associate pastor, Satoshi Nagasawa challenged the congregation to support the church's outreach ministries especially in Kyoto City's university campuses. Likewise, my beloved wife, Jo Ann also painted in words the things God is doing in and through our English ministries particularly the international service, the English language classes and the Bible classes at church. The event was prolonged, but the sushi afterwards was worth the wait.

The African Night was a huge success, if numbers were the gauge. The turn out was really good last November 15th. Our brothers and sisters from Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe led the worship service. Their songs (some were in English, Zulu and Swahili) were definitely fantastic. The food they served were savory, delicious and truly African! I wish they do it again:) Bravo zulu to Patroba, Kepha and his wife Sarah, Vimbai, Naomi, Leena and Keith.

There were many others who worked behind the scene. Thanks Masako-san, her daughter and Ena Garcia for the decorations; Fukui-sensei and Halka-san for the translation; Cerrone for the technical assistance; Numata-sensei for the reception; and, a number of significant others who worked in the kitchen, fellowship room and in the lobby. Glory to God!!!

What's next?

Actually on Sunday, November 22nd we are holding our own version of THANKSGIVING. Yes! We are preparing a special program on that day not only for the worship service, but also for the fellowship afterwards. It's suppose to be a secret, but it may be difficult to hide a roasted turkey on the menu. I don't need to say more except that we want you to be there and be prepared to share the things you are thankful for. This may come quite belatedly, but the cost of the food is 500 yen per person;)

MISSIONS MONTH HIGHLIGHTS

October is harvest time in Japan. It’s amazing that God uses many people to bless us with farm produce even though we live in the city and don’t own any land. We’ve received rice, sweet potatoes, apples, and chili peppers to name a few.
This month is also a good reminder of the harvest we are suppose to be doing – the harvest of souls in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Thus, we have introduced our annual Missions emphasis month at the Assembly Kyoto Church since 2007.

This year, our messages are not only centered on this ministry. We are doing some practical applications too. First, we identified several missionaries now serving overseas. We communicated with them and asked for information on how they are doing personally, in their ministries and as a family. We made it a point to introduce them to the church during the services and to also pray for them. The congregation also prepared letters/cards of encouragement for them.

We also encourage everyone to increase their giving. As an international congregation, we prepare “sacrificial meals” after every worship meeting. Those who join are then giving donations that they have decided in their hearts.

In the last few weeks, the Philippines experienced extraordinary battering of typhoons that killed, displaced and traumatized many people. The church has decided to support ministries that help those most affected. From October 18-25, we are collecting and packing relief goods to be sent to various places in the Philippines. We are looking at ten big boxes of supplies filled with clothing, food items and other basic necessities.

The month is not yet over and we will keep on talking about prayer, missions, giving and personal evangelism. We are exhorting our flock to make missions a part of their daily life. We are also featuring a missionary couple attending our service to give a testimony about the challenges and joys of doing missions.

FRUITFUL VISIT

Pastor Gani Sison (Chair, IT Leadership Team/CEO, ITP) together with his wife, Edith (IT-East Asia Leader) concluded their trip to Japan on a high note. After spending several days in Nagoya Prefecture, they arrived in Kyoto City on the 21st of September and wasted no time in meeting with International Teams field missionaries and their host churches represented by the churches’ pastors and their wives.

The guests saw first-hand the ministries that the missionaries are engaged in and the potential for growth even as the local pastors pledged to accept more missionaries into their fold. IT-Philippines has sent a couple in Nagoya Prefecture, a family in Kyoto City and two other families in Hyogo Prefecture.

Pastor Gani also preached in the evening service before the AKC International Congregation on September 27 encouraging the believers to look into the future with hope by citing the passage in Jeremiah 29:11 and telling stories of God’ miracles.

The Sisons flew back to Manila on September 29.

CONGRATULATIONS

On September 24th, our dear sister in the Lord, Ampaitepin Singhabhandhu (Thailand) graduated from Kyoto University garnering her PhD. Patroba Odera, Muhannad Fakhoury and I were there to witness the solemn occasion.

SAYONARA

Our short-term missionary, Ken Poon left for the U.S. on October 3 after staying in Japan for six months. He served in various capacities including but not limited to leading English Bible Studies, video production, doing a skit for children and establishing rapport with new contacts. Please pray for Ken as he considers and prepares himself for a career in Missions.

Likewise, Ampaitepin went back to Thailand on September 30 to chart her future. Please pray for wisdom and a powerful witness among her relatives and friends.

A Summer to Remember

It is a bit disconcerting to write this blog quite belatedly. However, as the title goes, I literally have to remember some of the details to write this narrative.

Some two weeks ago we did something in the international service that we don’t usually do (never done it under my watch to be specific): a party prior to a worship service! In the church garden!

Well, it’s the last Sunday of August and we wanted to approach the coming month with a bang. Actually, it’s Keiko-sensei’s idea that we do the program outside the church sanctuary. The weather that week was unpredictable with the possibility of rain. I was skeptical at first, but later gave in to her suggestion. The rest is history.

The program started with a prayer, some songs and games. Who says that Christians don’t know how to enjoy some fun? It’s laugh-out-loud for everyone with every move and antics recorded on video for future reference and for posterity’s sake.

Imagine yourself with a pack of “hungry” (read: modest) people ready to devour (read: first-come-first-serve) every bit that jumps from the grill. Meat, vegetable and seafood are in abundance to whet everyone’s appetite. The scent of kimono-clad women is replaced by the tinge of barbecue. I surmise that the most popular drink that night was mugicha (barley tea) although other non-alcoholic drinks were also available. To top it all, there was kakigori (flavored shaved-ice) for everyone to enjoy.

As the sun finally rested its eyes to sleep, we proceeded to the second part of the program, which was solemn and worshipful. My wife, Jo Ann, led the singing and Cerrone rendered a special song, characteristic of his soulful style. Trey Rowzie shared his heart-warming testimony of how he received God’s grace during his wondering and wandering years before Christ found him. Moreover, for the sermonette I delivered that evening, it was all about the lighter side of Jesus’ life on earth entitled, “What Else Did Jesus Do?”

It’s important to note here that fellow missionary Hayato Fukui did a great job of translating all the proceedings of the program. His spirited and meaningful expressions are truly remarkable. Likewise, all who volunteered to make the said event a success deserve a real kudos. Some 94 people graced the occasion.

THINGS TO BRING: FOOD, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks (and lots of it if you want to share); board GAMES, card games and Frisbees, if you have any; sun-block lotion, if you’re not in the mood for a tan; Bible; CASH, if you want to buy from the only two available shops (selling taco and takoyaki) inside the park grounds or if you want to use the floating devices on the lake

ACCESS: Take a subway train (Karasuma Line) that runs from north to south of Kyoto City. Get off at Kokusaikaikan Station (end of the line to the North) otherwise known as the Kyoto International Conference Center Station. As you exit the ticket gate, follow the signs to EXIT 5 leading to the park. We will wait for you right there by the soda vending machines.

Please come on time. Make plans to arrive before or at 9:45AM. Spots that we can use as a group are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will walk together to the designated place.

FAQs:

1. Can I invite or bring along some of my friends? Yes. They are all welcome. The more the merrier.

2. Can I swim in the lake? I did not ask when I went there. My hunch is you cannot. I saw some ducks and fishes, but the water is not inviting for a right thinking human being.

3. What if I cannot come as early as 9:45AM? Just give us a call and we will figure things out together. Remember, it takes a while to walk and pick someone from the station and back to the park. It’s a good exercise though.

4. What if it rains? Please bring an umbrella. We will push through as scheduled, especially if it’s just a trickle or a cloudy day. If it’s a stormy weather, then we will cancel it.

Halka Shitabayashi has gone to the Philippines on June 16, 2009 for a three-year counseling course at the Alliance Graduate School in Quezon City. Please pray for her adjustment, safety, study and smooth processing of her student visa.

Halka is our international congregation's first Japanese to consider preparing and doing full-time ministry. Praise the Lord!

Sad Events

I just want to covet your prayers for the family of Perseveranda So who died in a terrorist attack in Pakistan. She was serving as chief of education for UNICEF when terrorists bombed the Pearl Continental Hotel where she was temporarily staying in Peshawar, Pakistan last Tuesday (9 June). Percy, as she was known to her colleagues, family and friends, is one of the three daughters of Ernesto and Cora So, members of the church I used to pastor in the Philippines. Percy’s remains are yet to be repatriated to the Philippines.

On a separate note, please include in your prayers my parents in the Philippines, who have to oversee the funeral of my uncle Eustaquio Rey. He passed away this Wednesday (June 10th) after being bedridden for several months.

SAYONARA: Some of the exchange students have returned to their home countries recently. They are Danielle Rae Nieves, Jean Lin and Greg Slover.

Likewise, a team of six students from Georgia University, GA bade farewell after a two-week mission exposure trip here in Kyoto City. We were blessed by their prayers, testimonies, participation in the campus Bible classes, and in the worship services. Megan Hallford led the team.

Last June 3rd, Timothy Williams II left for Louisiana after serving with us for almost six months. Lord-willing, he intends to come back by June 29th. Please pray for his financial needs.

NEW SEMINARY STUDENT: After studying in the US and working in Japan for several years, Halka Shitabayashi is moving again. This time, she is going to the Philippines to pursue a Master's course in counseling. It's exciting because she is the very first one to decide to serve the Lord full-time in the future from the International congregation. She is leaving on June 16, 2009 with our church's prayers and partial financial support.

WELCOME: We are sad to see people leave, but we are glad to welcome those who have come regularly to our services recently: Mark & Lois Whitson (Utah, USA), Patroba Odera (Kenya), Miki Liu (Taiwan/Australia), Mihoko Okuyama (Japan), Allan Alipio (Philippines) and Yoko Maruyama (Japan).

MINISTRY EXPANSION: Praise the Lord for additional Bible classes that He led us to open. The church now has two classes at Osaka Medical College (Takatsuki City) and four classes at Doshisha University (Kyoto City). We also have four other classes/Gospel meetings at Kyoto University.

BAPTISMS: Last Sunday (June 7th), four people were baptized at the Japanese service. Praise the Lord!

Flu Scare

KYOTO CITY, Friday (22 May 2009) - Government and school authorities here have declared a week-long holiday to minimize the spread of the new flu virus that was detected in a 10-year old boy. It is Kyoto's first reported case of the H1N1 virus.

It's rainy today and the kids are at home. The kids are excited to be home, but my wife and I are thinking to keep their days occupied, productive and fun. I already heard the word "bored" three hours after they wake up.:) Think of five more days to go (at the least) before they go back to school.

God is good. God is great. God is glorious. Why not spend time worshiping Him?

For those living in Kyoto City, here are some reminders:

1. Please keep yourself informed. Information on prevention and other precautionary measures are advised. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

a. Frequent and careful washing of hands with antibacterial soap (at least for three minutes). Otherwise, use hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes.
b. Gargle using any commercially available gargling solution especially after coming back home.
c. Avoid heavily populated areas. Wear a mask while in public.

2. When an infection is suspected:

a. Make sure to check your temperature first.
b. Don't go directly to any medical institution or pharmacy for quick-fix medication. Try calling this number first for important instructions and to minimize the risk of spreading the disease.

This year, my family will mark our 8th year of ministry in Japan and our third year in Kyoto City. Time flies so fast indeed.

Our ministry is getting extended since we received our new missionary visa last Wednesday (May 13th), on the same date as my spiritual birthday. Speaking of my spiritual birthday (being born again), I came to know the Lord Jesus Christ through the Vacation Bible School (VBS) that I attended in my hometown some 24 years ago. Thanks to Engr. Noel Constantino, who shared to me the Gospel, and to Pastor Ruel Penaloza who led the said outreach ministry at the time.

My family also wants to say, "Thanks" to all of you who have supported and prayed for us concerning this matter. Here's another testimony to God's unfailing grace and providence.

Our visa extension comes with a fresh mandate to continue our mission work here. Please pray that God would use us mightily in spreading His word and in the building up of His church.

I've been busy with my new "baby"!

NO! Not a crying, diaper-wetting baby. I mean the new social network I've created. It's actually a prayer network called Japan Prayer Link (JPL for short). That's what's keeping me busy lately: moderating and answering questions and messages from all over the world.

The challenge for me is to keep ideas flowing. Writing for me as a hobby is also an exercise to keep in touch with the creative side. Inspiration is a necessary motivation.

We'll what else is new?

Yesterday (Sunday, May 3rd) was our 10th international service anniversary. My co-worker, Keiko-sensei and I stumbled upon our church records and discovered a few weeks earlier that this event was forthcoming. Needless to say, we had to prepare a special program for the occasion and a customary celebration after the service. We didn't have enough time to promote it though.

The program's other features (in addition to what we usually do on regular Sundays) included a reading of the church's history, a presentation of the Senior Pastor's vision for the local church and a testimony from a living witness through the years of AKC ministry, and a special song rendered by the YA Sunday School Group.

The food was distinctly Japanese except for the leche flan (pudding) that my wife cooked. Thanks to the faithful and supportive ministry of some ladies (and men too!) in the church.

Jesus Is Alive!

Last night, I spoke on the subject of what the resurrection meant to the ones who first witnessed it. The Scripture text I used was Luke 24:1-12.

Here's the outline of the message:

WHAT DOES THE RESURRECTION MEAN?

INTRODUCTION:

I. TO THE WOMEN

A. The women were identified/ named in verse 10.

B. The women were loyal and faithful supporters of Jesus – c.f., Luke 8:1-3; 23:46- 49; 24:1

*IN LIFE - ¹ Soon afterward Jesus began a tour of the nearby towns and villages, preaching and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom of God. He took his twelve disciples with him, ² along with some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases. Among them were Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons; ³ Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s business manager; Susanna; and many others who were contributing their own resources to support Jesus and his disciples. (Luke 8:1-3)

*IN DEATH - ⁴⁶ Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.

⁴⁷ When the Roman officeroverseeing the execution saw what had happened, he worshiped God and said, “Surely this man was innocent.” ⁴⁸ And when all the crowd that came to see the crucifixion saw what had happened, they went home in deep sorrow. ⁴⁹But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching. (Luke 23:46 - 49)

*IN BURIAL - ¹ But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. (Luke 24:1)

C. The women were the first to receive the news of the resurrection and one of them (Mary Magdalene) was the first one to see Jesus alive.

LESSON/APPLICATION:

A. Their service was never in vain - How would you feel after realizing that all that you have worked for and all you have invested in with your strength, time & resources have come to nothing?

1 Corinthians 15:58 ^“So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.”

B. Their sorrow turned into joy –

II. TO THE DISCIPLES

A. The disciples were student-followers of Jesus. Judas betrayed Him and later committed suicide. In contrast to the women, they all deserted Jesus when He was arrested. Peter, the most vocal among them, denied Him three times.

B. Imagine their fear, shame and sense of loss.

C. Then they heard the news from the women (verse 9). But they didn’t believe it (verse 11). They thought it’s too good to be true.

LESSON/APPLICATION:

A. There are things that block our reception of the truth, even how Good the News is. Are we aware of any? How can we remedy it?

B. Jesus showed them kindness, love and forgiveness. How would you feel when you meet someone you know you have offended or have sinned against? I suppose that’s what Peter felt. That’s what the other disciples felt. Yet, Jesus Christ restored them into a right relationship with Him and commissioned them for ministry as His witnesses.

III. TO US

A. We were not there when it happened some 2,000 years ago. But, this greatest miracle in history has reached us today. What are we going to do about it?

B. Well, we have two options:

We accept and believe it; or,
We ignore and do not believe it.

C. I pray that we will choose to accept and believe it. But, why should it matter whether Jesus Christ rose from the dead? ANSWER: Because, if it is true (and it is) there are eternal consequences. His physical resurrection is important only if it’s true. If Jesus didn’t rise from the grave, then the unbeliever is no worse or better off than before. However, if Jesus did rise from the dead, then it is reasonable to believe that everything He claimed is true. If what Jesus claimed is true, then He died for the sins of the world and one receives eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul told the people in Athens that God wants all people everywhere to repent because he has set a day when He will judge the world by Jesus. He has given proof of this by raising Him from the dead (Acts 17:16-33). Paul asserts that Christ has indeed been raised from the dead (I Corinthians 15:20-22).

I’d like you to meet my friend Chris. We’ve been friends for a very long time.

私の友人、クリスに合ってください。私達はもう何年来の友達です。

Wow! It looks like Chris is pretty tired. I guess that’s what happens when you’re the oldest caterpillar in the world!

うあ～、クリスはとっても疲れているようです。きっと何かが起こって、世界一年寄りのイモムシになったのでしょう。

Leader: Chris, tell us, how did you become the oldest caterpillar in the world?

クリス、どうして君は世界一年寄りのイモムシになってしまったんだい？

Chris: Well, to be honest, my life wasn’t supposed to be like this. I was born to fly. My dad was a flyer. So was my mom. My grandpa was a radical flyer. He did things most flyers never dream of doing. And I was determined to be the greatest flyer of them all!

クリス　う～ん　正直言って僕の人生はこんなはずじゃなかったんだ。僕は飛ぶために生まれたんだよ。僕のお父さんは飛んでいたし、お母さんもさ。お爺さんなんかサイコーだった、誰も想像出来ない位すごかったものさ。だから僕は誰よりも素晴らしく飛ぶんだって心に決めたんだ！

Leader: What kept you from flying Chris?

どうして君は飛ばなくなっちゃったの？

Chris: I’m not exactly sure. I worked harder than any other caterpillar around. I exercised. I ate the right vegetation. I got the proper sleep. I even read Flyer’s Weekly where I learned techniques from the best of the best. But then came the day of covering.

クリス　　よくわからないよ。僕は周りの誰よりも一生懸命働いたし、練習もした。体にいい野菜を食べ、適切な睡眠を取り、最高の飛行技術を学ぶ為に、フライヤーズウィークリーを読んだりしてね。でもやがて「カバーリングの日」がやってきたんだよ。

Leader: The “covering”?

カバーリング？

Chris: I will never forget it. I was sitting on a leaf, minding my own business, when something started to cover me. My parents said “the covering” was how they became new creatures. They said it was the day they became free to one day soar through the sky!

クリス　僕はきっと絶対に忘れないと思うよ。僕が葉っぱの上に座って、仕事の事なんかを考えていると、何かが僕を覆い始めたんだ。両親からはカバーリングは新しい生き物に生まれ変わる為だって聞かされていた。それはいつか自由に大空を飛び回れる為の日だって言うんだよ。

But I wasn’t expecting it. What was happening? I was afraid. So I squirmed out from underneath it.

でも、僕はそうは思えなかった。何が起こったかって？怖かったのさ。

だからそれから這い出したんだ。

Oh, I knew I was supposed to change into a chrysalis, and then a few weeks later, I’d change again to become a butterfly. But I saw a chrysalis once. It sort of freaked me out. It looked dead! How could anything good come out of that? What if I didn’t come out at all?

うん、僕はたぶん繭になって、それから何週間かしたら蝶に生まれ変わるはずだと分かっていたよ。でも繭を見た事があるけど、ゾッとしたよ。死んでいるみたいだった。どうやったら、あんな物から何か素敵な物が出て来れるんだい？もし生まれ変わらなかったらどうするんだい？

So every time it starts to happen, I squirm away. Now I’m the oldest caterpillar ever. And I never become a flyer.

Maybe one of these days … it seems kind of risk, but maybe one day…

そうやって、いつも同じ事が起ころうとすると、僕は這い出してしまうんだ。

今、僕は世界一の年寄りイモムシで、飛べるようにはならないよ。

もしかしたら、そのうちいつか・・・なんだか危なっかしい気がする、でももしかしたらいつの日か・・・。

Leader: What do you think? What has Chris missed? Why won’t he allow himself to be covered?

貴方はどう思いますか？　クリスは何を失ったのでしょうか？

The Bible says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Cor 5:17).

聖書には「誰でもキリストの内にあるならその人は新しく造られた者です。古いものは過ぎ去って全てが新しくなりました。第Ⅱコリント５－１７」とあります。

Jesus came to earth so that through his life, his death on the cross, and his resurrection, he could make us new.

キリストがこの世に来られたのは、彼の命、十字架上の死、復活を通して私達を新しくする為なのです。

He came to cover all our sin and disobedience. But He didn’t just cover it up; He took it away!

キリストは私達の全ての罪と不従順を覆う為に来られましたが、ただ覆うだけで無く、それらを取り去る為に来られたのです。

He makes us his new people. He gives us His own purity, his own goodness, his own holiness, so we can live as God’s friends now and forever.

イエスは私達を新しくして下さいます。キリストにあって　聖くし、善いもので満たし、聖なる者としてくださいます。その結果、私達は永遠に神の友として生きる事が出来るのです。

We don’t have to earn this new life. We don’t have to work and strive to get it. New Life is a free gift. Do you want to accept that gift?

私達は自分の力でこの新しい命を手に入れる必要はないのです。それを得ようと努力して何かをする必要はありません。新しい命は無代価の贈り物です。この贈り物を受け取りたいとは思いませんか？

In Jesus, you have become a new creation! Just as God turns caterpillars into beautiful butterflies, he has made you his beautiful new creation through faith in what Jesus did for you on the cross! You are new!

キリストにあるなら貴方は新しく造られた者です。まさに神がイモムシを美しい蝶に変えられるように。キリストが貴方の為に十字架上でなさった事を信じるなら、その信仰を通して、神は貴方を新しく美しく造り変えて下さるのです。

Let’s thank Jesus for his great gift of new life!

Last Sunday, North Korea finally launched its rocket passing through Japan's airspace and then it went down into the Pacific Ocean.

Although the issue is not yet over, we in Japan are glad to know that there's no untoward incident that happened here relating to the said launch.

A Nation in Peril

North Korea is set to launch their long range missile anytime between April 4-8, 2009

And, Japan is not sitting idly by. The government has authorized the military to shoot down any suspected ballistic missile when in reaches Japan's airspace. The former is threatening that any hostile act against its launch is an act of war and would respond accordingly.

"Wars and rumors of wars" were predicted by the Lord Jesus Christ. However, Christians are not to cower in fear because of these things, but to be assured of God's abiding presence by the Holy Spirit and the certainty that the hour of His Second Coming is drawing ever closer. Take it as an early warning device that tells you something is going to happen really soon. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, so to speak.

Whatever happens we are secure in God's hands. God sits on the throne and He is in full control of everything. We will continue to do the task He has called us to do and wait for His coming.

Hallelujah. Maranatha! (Even so come Lord Jesus!)

We held the Sayonara Fellowship for the family last March 1st. Many of the couple's former students came and graced the occasion. Friends and other members of the church were also in attendance.

Tony and Ka Min Mills spent a total of fifteen years in Japan. They had ministry experiences spanning from Tokyo, Kyoto and Kyushu. They have two sons: John (14) and David (9).

Invitation to Attend Our Sayonara Fellowship for the Mills Family

After fifteen years of adventure and doing ministry in Japan, Tony and his family are set to leave the country in the coming days. Together with Ka Min and their two sons, John and David, they are going back to Adelaide, Australia.

The fellowship in their honor will be held after the International Service at 17:00, 1 March 2009.

A Night to Remember

There were 25 people who attended last night’s fellowship. Jake De Guzman, my brother-in-law (still single and available) started the fun with a unique “Pull-the-string Game.” That is, men were ushered first inside the fellowship room while the ladies waited anxiously on the other side of the room, adjoining the worship hall. The latter had to tie a red string around their wrist while each man chose and pulled a string, revealing their “surprise” dinner date.

The dinner was simple yet satisfying. Thanks to Hayato Fukui, Pastor Keiko Murakami, Hisayo Miyasaki and my wife, Jo Ann. There’s spaghetti, garlic bread, fried chicken, veggies and ice cream for dessert. Chocolates? Lots of it! The table-setting included a red rose and a bottle of assorted sweets for everyone to guess the number of pieces in it and take it home for a prize. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly while an audio-video presentation of the old song “Where Do I Begin?” was playing in the background.

Leena Fukui (South Africa) shared insightful thoughts about the main theme of the night: LOVE. Her husband, Hayato-san (Japan), translated for her. It’s interesting because there was a question during the panel discussion with this couple (together with Jo Ann and I), concerning interracial marriage. In love and in God’s perfect will, there are no boundaries …

We sang, played, and listened to a beautiful solo rendition of “Who Am I?” by Cerrone Cabanos (Philippines). Laurel Ryan (USA) skillfully emceed. We finished way earlier than Cinderella’s almost midnight escape with acknowledgments, prayer and a photo session. Other nations represented in the event are Canada, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

Oh, you should have seen the decoration! Thanks to Rika Ha (South Korean) and Naoko Matsunaga for the hanging hearts all over the room.

All’s well that ends well. Kudos to everyone!

Kyoto Imperial Palace

Even though the temperature was chilly, the sun was out most of the day and so an unplanned visit to the famed Kyoto Imperial Palace is justified. Tim and I just finished a Bible class at Doshisha University and it seemed appropriate to give Tim a brief tour of the nearby palace grounds. Actually, I've never been inside the actual gated and guarded palace. I remember going twice or thrice to the pebbled outer area inside the walled perimeter -- something that makes you curious to know of what's inside when you see it while passing by in a vehicle....

We surveyed the map near the gate on the west side of the perimeter wall. We learned that prior reservation is necessary to enter the palace grounds. Surprisingly, my digital camera happened to be in my bag and that prompted us to continue our quest to see the place where Japan's history had its early beginnings.

When we went to the reservation office, we were offered a free tour with an English-speaking guide commencing at 2 o'clock. After signing a form and presenting our ID's we were off with a 30-minute window to have a tongue-scalding hot udon (wheat noodle) lunch. [Imagine waiting 10 minutes to be served and another 10 minutes to conquer everything, letting it through the unsuspecting esophagus. We needed to be at the waiting area ten minutes before the actual tour. Whew!]

Here's a miscellany of what I've seen:

1. For security or other reason, there are many areas that remain restricted to the public.

2. A branch of an old tree was cut off to save its life. Apparently, it was infected by a bacterial gall that dried up the tree. Up close, it looked like an ugly devastating cancer that attached and grew on a limb (I might show you the photo some other time).

3. Among other interesting facts and trivia that I've learned, the roofs of buildings were made of pine tree barks, arranged in thick layers and fastened with bamboo nails! Pine trees are in abundance within the palace grounds -- thousands of them! I didn't hear well what the guide said about the pine tree except that it's called matsu in Japanese. The verb form of "matsu" is to wait. The lady guide quickly added that pine trees symbolize "waiting...waiting for the Holy Spirit!"

PRAYER: "O, Lord God of the heavens and the earth, the God of the nations, please pour out your Holy Spirit over Kyoto and over Japan so that the people would hear the Gospel of your Son Jesus Christ and be saved from their sins. Amen."

Prayer Request

It usually comes and goes with the season. Cough and cold affect many people, especially children and the elderly, during this time of year. However, there is news circulating recently that new strains of influenza have been detected and they seem to be more dangerous if not outright fatal. In China and in other parts of Asia, cases of bird flu deaths have been reported. In Japan, several deaths were also in the news blaming it on flu, but there's no confirmation yet if it's from the said deadly virus.

I ask everyone to please pray for protection and healing for those who are affected. I hope it's nothing serious, but my son Josh is down today with flu. Likewise, Tim is still recovering from it after having it for a week already.

Likewise, simple hygiene (frequent washing of hands with soap) can prevent the spread of virus. I'm not a medical doctor, but conventional wisdom shows that early treatment of symptoms and seeking medical help could prevent more serious forms of illnesses. Please take care of yourself.

Remember: It's an act of worship to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God! Offer it to him healthy and without blemish.

Welcome Tim!

He stands at 5'11" with curly locks and is 23 years old from the land of jazz, Tabasco and Mardi Gras. I'm referring to our newest missionary-in-training, Timothy Williams II.

Tim arrived last January 12th from Louisiana, USA for an initial stint of three months. Actually, he was here before in May 2007 with the Xi Alpha team led by Pastor Chris Buckle, but only for two weeks.

He is still recovering from jet lag and bad sore throat, but he already delved into some of our activities starting yesterday at Kyoto University and today at the Osaka Medical College in Takatsuki City, Osaka. We have Bible classes at the said institutions.

Please pray that Tim would have a great time discovering his ministry niche here in Japan and that he would make God his only comfort and confidence.

Mabuhay! (Filipino way of saying "Welcome." It literally means, long live).

South Korean YWAM Team Visits

It's a beautiful sight to see. Over a dozen university students from S. Korea did a ministry presentation of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) before the international congregation of the Assembly Kyoto Church last Sunday, 11 January 2009. Indeed, the passion and sincerity of these young people are infectious.

Changhoon Jung, a fellow missionary who occasionally attends our services together with his family, introduced to us the team as they're doing their short-term missions trip to Japan. I already have prior idea of what YWAM stands for and its creative ministries geared towards the youth way back in college. I have friends who were involved with this organization in the Philippines. So, when Brother Jung mentioned about the team, I was really eager to have them come and minister to us.

The presentation included a personal testimony by a student who had the experience of doing ministry in Jordan. It was followed by a skit depicting broken hearts and the masks people wear to hide them. The message of the skit powerfully presents the Gospel in such a way that visually communicates people's need for God and His supernatural love that forgives and heals them. The group also rendered a heartfelt song in English and in Japanese.

It's a blessing in so many ways. For the believers in attendance, I think the team left us a silent call to be more passionate about God and to never lose sight of the Great Commission to reach the lost for Christ. For the non-Christian guests that day, they had the opportunity to see, hear and experience the love of God through everything that transpired. And, to the lady who went to Jordan? Well, she had the surprise of her life. She interfaced with Mohanad, a Jordanian Christian, who attends our services and is an exchange student at Kyoto University!

Needless to say, everthing went well for the glory of God. Even my children had a great time with the team, gaining them some instant friends. My daughter, Joyce (6), bonded with one of the ladies that both of them welled up in tears before saying goodbye. Oh, how sweet the fellowship indeed!

To Brother Jung and family, we will miss you as you go on furlough to Australia.

To the rest of us, arise shine for the Light has come and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us!

First Things First

Today is January 9, 2009. I'm here in our little rented apartment in the most traditional city in Japan. Kyoto, that is. The room temperature is cold because I haven't turned on the heater. It's comfortable though, courtesy of my multi-layered thermal clothing. This is my first blog of the year and on this newly created site (in case, you don't know yet).

First, a confession: I feel guilty that I don't write so often to our friends and family. We know that many people do care and pray for us, but we haven't updated them as often as we should. My hands look full and have excused myself for not having the time to do so. Nevertheless, come to think of it, we certainly have time for things that we care about doing. Excuse? Busted!!!

Second, a solution: I don't promise to write everyday to chronicle everything that happens, but I will do my best to update news about us and our ministry as often as necessary. So, I invite you to check this blog once in a while if you want to know the latest scoop about Japan and the progress of God's kingdom-building here.

Third, an appeal: Please feel free to edit my Janglish (Japanese English) mistakes. Otherwise, you may call my attention to it. I specially pay attention to details as to the veracity of the claims being presented. As my model pastor and godfather, Ben Dayrit once said, "Strive for intellectual honesty, social integrity and spiritual maturity."

Finally, a prayer: "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers" (The Third Epistle of John 2).
